More than half of all Mumbaikars live in slums. Bigots are trying to drive migrants away from Mumbai. As if this isn’t bad enough, we have to cope with new productions from Alyque Padamsee and ugly Hafeez Contractor buildings. Here, in no particular order, is our wish-list of 40 things we think should be removed to make Mumbai a better place.

Number 29. The Dharavi redevelopment plan

If developer Mukesh Mehta has his way, Dharavi will soon be a cluster of high-rise residential and commercial buildings in a neo-art deco style. Most (but not all) of the present residents will be housed in the area, and lakhs more will move into the posh new apartments for sale or commute in every day to work at the new office space that Mehta envisions. Considering Dharavi’s proximity to Bandra and the Bandra Kurla Complex, the rents are likely to be astronomical and the density of population, construction and traffic will turn the area into what some critics call a “non-functional area”. Yet, the plan has been steamrolled through, thanks to the untiring efforts of developers and politicians.

Kick the problem: The residents of Dharavi must be consulted in plans to redevelop the area. The authorities should also consider more sensitive (but no less practical) plans for the neighbourhood, such as those designed by the Kamala Raheja Vidyanidhi Institute of Architecture.
